This week we’re incredibly excited to share a piece of cinema by Sherwin Akbarzadeh and Rebecca Liley, whose intellects and visions I’ve admired for years.

Be home soon.

I sometimes get nervous receiving this in a message when I’m home alone at night. My mind opens to the superstition of last words. But I’m not one to imagine the worst. A loved one is out in the world, crossing roads, walking beneath streetlights. That’s ok with me.

I walk the streets regularly. I walk at night because I should be able to. I’ve learned it’s possible to feel simultaneously tense and at peace. Wary and compassionate. These feelings flicker so quickly they have become one feeling.

How do you feel when a woman is walking alone at night? She passes eucalypts, windows, driveways. Neon lights colour her hair. She walks through a crowd; she walks along an empty street. A man crosses in front of her.

This collaboration is a distilled reflection from Rebecca’s career in criminal law and justice, captured by Sherwin’s patient lens. A special melding of minds. I’m honoured they’ve shared their talents and passions with us for the Nocturnal Series. Hide Read more
